Battery Check with BimmerLink on BMW F36 420d

I recently ran a battery health check on my BMW F36 420d (B47 engine) using the BimmerLink app. After driving for a total of seven hours, the battery’s State of Charge (SOC) showed 89%. Before starting the trip, the SOC was 88%. During the entire drive, the only additional consumer was a TomTom navigation device connected through the cigarette lighter.

This raises a question: why does the SOC remain under 100% even after long highway driving?

Why the State of Charge Was 89%

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries, like the 90 Ah AGM fitted in my car, do not always show 100% SOC in real-world use. The charging strategy of BMW’s Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) and alternator management keeps the battery slightly below full charge. This improves battery life by reducing constant stress on the cells. In practice, an SOC between 80–90% is considered normal and healthy for these batteries.

The 1% increase (from 88% to 89%) after a long drive is typical. BMW’s energy management focuses on efficiency and battery protection, not on keeping the charge constantly at 100%.

How to Take Care of the Battery

To maintain battery health:

  • Avoid frequent short trips that prevent proper charging.
  • Use a smart charger once in a while to balance and top up the battery.
  • Limit unnecessary consumers when the engine is off.
  • Keep an eye on SOC via BimmerLink for early warning signs of weakness.

Expected State of Charge for AGM Battery

For a healthy 90 Ah AGM BMW battery, the expected SOC usually ranges between 75–95%. Seeing 89% after a long trip is a sign that the battery is working correctly and doesn’t indicate any issue.
