BMW F36 – Digital Speedometer in the Instrument Cluster
In this guide, we’ll show you how to activate the hidden digital speed readout in the instrument cluster using a Launch diagnostic tool—no expensive software or dealership visit required.

If you’ve ever passed a speed camera and wondered whether you were truly within the legal limit, you’re not alone. Many BMW F36 420d drivers wish they had a real-time, precise digital speedometer displayed at all times—not just when the cruise control is active.
Unfortunately, BMW doesn’t enable this feature by default in many F-series models. While the analog speedometer is stylish, it can be hard to read accurately, especially at lower speeds.
Why I Need It
- Know your exact speed in km/h or mph when driving near speed cameras
- Monitor speed more accurately than with analog dials
- Improve safety and compliance with local speed regulations
- Gain access to a useful OEM feature that’s simply disabled by default
How to Activate the Digital Speedometer Using Launch Diagnostic
Tools Needed:
- Launch X431 (or other compatible Launch diagnostic device)
- OBD2 port access
- Basic understanding of coding menus
⚠️ Important Notice After Coding
After activating the digital speedometer using the diagnostic tool, your vehicle may reset certain parameters:
- ⏰ Clock Reset: The system clock will be reset to default.
- ⛽ Fuel Consumption Stats: All trip-related statistics (average consumption, average speed, etc.) will be cleared.
Steps:
- Plug in the Launch diagnostic tool into the OBD2 port.
- Turn on the ignition but do not start the engine.
- Choose BMW > Automatically identify VIN.
- Navigate to:
- Body > Kombi (Instrument Cluster)
- Go to Coding/Programming > Personalization
- Look for the option:
- Digital Speed in Instrument Cluster / Digital Vehicle Speed / BC Button Called UP BC Button to Call
- Change the value from “Disabled” to “Enabled 01”
- Save and exit the coding menu.
- Restart the car, and you should now see the digital speed in the cluster display.

⚠️ Note: Depending on your region or software version, menu names may vary slightly.

Limitations / Downsides
- Not available on all firmware versions or older instrument clusters
- May reset during dealer software updates
- Launch tools may lack access if not fully updated or unlocked
- Some insurance policies or lease agreements might not allow user coding
- Can’t adjust font size or position – it’s a fixed display
Video Tutorial – Digital Speedometer Activation
🚘 In this video, I’ll show you how to unlock the hidden digital speedometer in your BMW F36 420d using the Launch diagnostic tool — no dealership visit required! This simple coding change lets you see your exact speed in the instrument cluster, even without cruise control active. Perfect for driving near speed cameras or speed zones where accuracy matters.
⚠️ WARNING:
- The system clock will be reset
- Fuel consumption stats and trip data will be erased
- A (!) warning icon will appear in the dashboard
Conclusion
Activating the digital speedometer in your BMW F36 420d is a small yet impactful upgrade. It offers greater driving confidence, especially when navigating urban speed zones or camera areas. While there are minor limitations, the benefits far outweigh them—especially when you can unlock it yourself in under 10 minutes using the Launch diagnostic tool.
This tweak is part of a wider set of hidden features in BMW vehicles that can enhance your driving experience without expensive upgrades. Explore more, drive smarter.
