What Is Reaction Time and Why Does It Matter in Traffic?
Reaction time is the amount of time between seeing a stimulus and starting your physical response. In driving, this usually means the time between noticing a hazard and pressing the brake pedal.
Many people believe their reaction time is around 250 milliseconds (0.25 seconds) because that's what they achieve in simple online reaction tests. While this is true in a laboratory-style environment, it does not represent real driving.
There are two different types of reaction time.
Simple Reaction Time
Simple reaction time measures how quickly you respond to a single known stimulus.
Examples include:
- clicking your mouse when a light turns green
- pressing a key when a sound plays
- tapping your phone when the screen changes color
Because your brain already knows exactly what will happen, the only task is to execute the movement as quickly as possible.
Healthy adults typically achieve:
- 180–250 ms: excellent
- 250–400 ms: average
- 400+ ms: slower than average

Complex Reaction Time
Driving is completely different.
Before pressing the brake pedal, your brain must:
- Notice something unusual.
- Decide whether it is actually dangerous.
- Predict what may happen next.
- Choose the correct action.
- Move your foot from the accelerator to the brake.
- Apply sufficient braking force.
This process is called complex reaction time (sometimes referred to as perception-response time).
Because several cognitive steps happen before any movement begins, the total reaction time in traffic is much longer than a simple click test.
Traffic engineers generally assume a reaction time of 1.0–1.2 seconds when calculating stopping distances, road design, and safe following distances.
This is why your online reaction test may show 280 ms, while your real-world driving reaction can easily exceed one second.

It is important to remember that these numbers do not represent your real braking reaction time.
A driver who scores 250–400 ms on this test will typically require around 0.7–1.2 seconds to recognize a hazard, decide to brake, move their foot, and begin slowing the vehicle.
The test measures your reflexes. Real driving measures your perception, judgment, and decision-making as well.
What Slows Down Your Reaction Time?
Many factors influence how quickly your brain and body respond while driving.
Alcohol
Alcohol reduces concentration, slows decision-making, and delays muscle response. Even small amounts can noticeably increase reaction time.
Fatigue
Driving while tired affects reaction time almost as much as alcohol. Microsleeps and reduced alertness make it much harder to respond to unexpected hazards.
Mobile Phone Use
Looking at your phone—even for just a couple of seconds—dramatically increases reaction time because your attention is divided between driving and the device.
Age
Reaction time naturally becomes slower with age. While experienced drivers often compensate through better anticipation, physical reflexes generally decline over time.
Medications
Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications, especially those causing drowsiness, can reduce alertness and delay reactions. Always check whether a medicine affects your ability to drive.
Darkness and Poor Visibility
Low light, rain, fog, and glare make hazards harder to detect. The brain needs more time to identify potential dangers, increasing overall reaction time.
