One Year Later – Real Impact of Start/Stop Memory Coding on My BMW
After a full year of driving with the Start/Stop memory feature enabled, I now have enough real-world data to properly evaluate whether this coding change made a meaningful difference. With an additional 30,000 km driven, the numbers clearly show how the system behaves over time when it is no longer automatically re-enabled on every engine start.
What Changed After 30,000 km?
The car now has approximately 130,000 km, compared to around 100,000 km when I first enabled the coding feature.

After approximately one year and an additional 30,000 km of driving, I checked the diagnostic data again to see how the Start/Stop memory coding affected real-world usage.
The car now has approximately 130,000 km. When I first enabled the Start/Stop memory function, the vehicle had around 100,000 km.

⚠️ Important Note About Engine Start Cycle Counter
BMW performed a software upgrade on my vehicle, and after that update, the diagnostic value for “Number of Engine Start Cycles” appears to have been overwritten or reset.

This value is clearly not realistic for a vehicle with approximately 130,000 km. -

This estimate is based on my previously recorded value of ~7,805 and the additional driving after the update.
Key Observations
The most important metric to analyze is the number of Start/Stop activations. Initially, the system had already triggered 19,638 times. After another 30,000 km, that number increased to just 19,641.
Minimal Increase in Activations
This means that over 30,000 km of additional driving, the Start/Stop system activated only 3 times. This is a dramatic contrast compared to the original usage pattern.
Why This Matters
Before enabling memory coding, the system was constantly active, shutting down and restarting the engine multiple times during a single drive. Now, it only activates in rare situations — most likely when manually enabled or triggered under specific conditions.
Comparison of Driving Behavior
The data clearly shows how the driving experience has changed after enabling this feature.
Before Coding
- Around 196 activations per 1,000 km
- Approximately 3–4 activations per drive
- Frequent engine restarts in city traffic
After Coding
- Around 0.1 activations per 1,000 km
- Practically zero activations per drive
- No unwanted engine shutdowns
Impact on Daily Driving Comfort
Smoother City Driving
Driving in urban conditions is now significantly more predictable. The engine remains running during short stops, which removes unnecessary interruptions.
Better Control
I now decide when the engine should shut off — not the system. This is especially useful in situations like:
- approaching roundabouts
- quick stops at intersections
- stop-and-go traffic
Reduced Annoyance
Previously, the system often felt intrusive. Now, the driving experience is consistent and more aligned with my expectations from a BMW.
Engine Start Cycle Considerations
It is worth mentioning that BMW performed a software update which affected the diagnostic data for engine start cycles. The current reading is not fully reliable, so I am using an estimated value based on previous measurements.
Practical Interpretation
Even with approximate values, it is clear that normal engine starts increased in a predictable way, while Start/Stop activations almost completely stopped increasing.
Final Thoughts – What Do You Think?
After one year and 30,000 km, the data confirms that this simple coding change had a massive impact:

- Improved driving comfort
- No negative side effects observed
