BMW Oil and Filter Change Cost (2016 Model)

Owning a BMW comes with responsibility. Regular maintenance keeps the engine reliable and efficient. One of the most important tasks is replacing the oil and filters on time. Many BMW drivers wonder how often this should be done and how much it actually costs. In this post, I share my real-world experience with a BMW F36 420d (2016 model) and provide exact prices for parts and service.

Which Engine Is in My Car?

My BMW F36 420d (2016) is equipped with the B47 engine – a 2.0L four-cylinder turbo diesel. This engine replaced the older N47 and is known for better efficiency, lower fuel consumption, and reduced emissions.

My Real-Life Example

I drive around 25,000 km per year. With this mileage, it is important not to rely only on the car’s computer but to follow a strict maintenance schedule.

  • At 104,000 km, I changed all filters and the engine oil: Service log
  • At 113,000 km, after driving another 8,500 km, I replaced only the oil and oil filter: Service log

This pattern helps me balance cost and performance.

Which Maintenance Intervals I Am Following?

Here is the service interval I follow for the BMW F36 420d:

  • Engine Oil + Oil Filter: every 8,000 – 12,000 km
  • Air Filter: once a year or every 25,000 km
  • Fuel Filter: once a year or every 25,000 km
  • Cabin Filter: once a year or every 25,000 km

Note: The listed prices are indicative and may vary depending on the supplier and location. Additionally, the total cost should include the labor fee for the mechanic performing the oil and filter replacement.

So, a complete service with all filters and oil costs about €136 if you do it yourself with quality parts. An oil-only change is around €72.

Why I Use BMW TWIN POWER TURBO SAE 5W-30 LL-04?

I use BMW TWIN POWER TURBO SAE 5W-30 LL-04 oil because:

  • It has the official BMW Longlife-04 approval, fully compatible with the B47 engine.
  • It provides excellent engine and turbocharger protection.
  • It is designed for modern diesel engines with DPF filters.
  • It helps reduce deposits and extend the engine’s lifespan.

Alternative Oil Option

According to the manual that came with the car, I can also use BMW Longlife-12 FE oil. This oil is optimized for newer BMW diesel engines, offering lower friction and improved fuel economy while still meeting the required specifications.

Benefits of Regular Oil Changes

Replacing oil and filters on time has many benefits:

  • Improved engine performance
  • Better fuel economy
  • Lower engine wear and tear
  • Longer lifespan of the turbo and injectors
  • Cleaner exhaust gases

For me, this investment pays off in peace of mind and long-term reliability.

Conclusion

The BMW F36 420d is a great balance of performance and efficiency, but only if maintained properly. Regular oil and filter changes are the foundation of keeping the car in top condition. Based on my experience, the yearly cost of servicing this car is reasonable compared to potential repair bills caused by poor maintenance. Spending around €250–300 per year on oil and filters is a small price to pay for long-term reliability, lower fuel consumption, and peace of mind on the road.
