BMW 216d Gran Coupe in the City

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe (chassis code F44) is BMW’s entry-level four-door coupe. The F44 combines sporty styling with practicality, offering a more compact alternative to the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

The car examined in this report from 2020, showing 67,239 km on the odometer. It is equipped with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder diesel engine, designed for efficiency in both city and highway driving. The vehicle had a check engine warning active, so we connected it to a diagnostic tool.

In this article, we present the fault codes and data that were retrieved during the diagnostic session.

Check Engine Light and Errors Found

The car had an active check engine light, with the following error codes recorded during diagnostics:

DME/DDE (Digital Diesel Electronics / ECM)

  • 2D5600: Oxygen Sensor After Catalytic Converter, Signal: Open Circuit

KAFAS (Camera-Based Driver Assistance Systems)

  • 800ABF: KAFAS Camera – Field Of Vision Impaired For A Short Time

BDC (Body Domain Controller)

  • 804081: Driver Readiness, Error – Production Not Possible

These errors indicate issues with emissions monitoring (oxygen sensor), temporary driver assistance camera vision problems, and a readiness-related error in the body domain controller.

Diagnostic Data from DME/DDE

To better understand the car’s diesel particulate filter (DPF) health and engine condition, we extracted additional data from the control unit.

These values represent the DPF’s self-cleaning cycles. The soot mass and temperature readings show how effectively the DPF burns off accumulated soot during regeneration. Frequent regenerations (every ~444 km) suggest the filter is working as intended.

Oil Condition Parameters

  • Oil Ash Mass reflects non-combustible residues left in the engine oil due to combustion and DPF regeneration.
  • Oil Dilution Level indicates the percentage of fuel mixed into the oil during post-injection phases for DPF regeneration. A 7.70% level means the oil should be monitored closely and changed soon to maintain engine health.

Highway Driving for Regeneration

To initiate a successful DPF regeneration, the car was driven on the highway under optimal conditions (after clearing error codes).

Before the highway drive, the check engine fault (2D5600: Oxygen Sensor After Catalytic Converter, Signal: Open Circuit) was cleared. The car was then driven on the highway to initiate regeneration. Unfortunately, after restarting the engine, the fault code reappeared.

The vehicle will be inspected at an authorized BMW service centre for further diagnostics.

After the regeneration was completed, the following updated values were recorded:
